Today's Accolade - the Only One that Counts

In medieval times the accolade of knighthood was administered with a blow to the shoulder or face, or the tapping of a sword. These symbolic gestures were appropriate for the times and culture.

The accolade still denotes a personal transformation, but today's transformation must be so deep and personal and detached from others that no symbolic gesture given by another can really suffice. Indeed, the transformation itself is the only accolade for which we can be certain.

This is best understood as a new or second birth in which reason and conscience take their proper place, alongside an awareness of life’s mystery.

If in the way you live your life you hold on to the same old ways, such as the same old bigotries, on what basis can you assume yourself a Knight?
