What about Unity?

It seems that we all like the idea of unity, as long as we all unite to a single goal or belief – usually our own choosing. That, of course, doesn’t work very well. Everyone has his or her own perspective, and that brings in very different beliefs and goals.

While unity is often touted as a national ideal, little effort is made to achieve it.

Various priorities and ideologies divide our politics into competing factions. The concept of God has produced a spectrum of differing beliefs that eye each other suspiciously. Regional values slice the map with deeply entrenched distrust. Bigotry adds personal barriers difficult to admit, much less overcome. With all these impediments, unity becomes a fleeting ideal achieved only during times of major threat.

Chivalry-Now stands out as a movement because it opens the door to unity. It invites people with moral cognitions that are basically common to us all. Race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual preference, and regional backgrounds present no obstacles. That’s because human conscience belongs to us all. The ability to reason belongs to us all. The desire for personal authenticity, severely oppressed by myriad social pressures, also belongs to us all. Each of us knows the value of truth, justice, heroic service and a world of peaceful cooperation. We all want a compassionate, civilized world for our children – with no more poverty, no more war, no more corruption, and no more exploitation by the powerful.

Unity can bring all this about. We know this. We also know, in our heart of hearts, that fragmentation prevents it. The lines of our separations are as unnatural as they are unnecessary, and yet many of us doggedly cling to them.

No matter who you are, or where you live, or how much money you have, if you want to bring unity, do what is most natural to the deepest instincts of your conscience:

  • Develop your life for the greater good.
  • Be more concerned about your personal character than the acquisition of money.
  • Discover the relationship with truth that humility brings with it.
  • Be honest.
  • Protect the vulnerable. Be their hero.
  • Respect equality between the genders, and between us all.
  • Uphold justice.
  • Love unselfishly.
  • Do not demean or exploit the frailties of others.
  • Live a life of generosity.
  • Help those in need.
  • Learn to be forgiving.
  • Live a life of courtesy and honor.

This is what the Chivalry-Now movement is all about.
